Sichuan Bloody Mahjong

Fast-paced 'blood battle' where play continues until only one player remains

What Is Sichuan Bloody Mahjong?

Sichuan Bloody Mahjong (血战到底, xuè zhàn dào dǐ - "Blood Battle to the End") is an exciting regional variant from Sichuan province known for its aggressive gameplay. The defining feature is that the game doesn't end when the first player wins - it continues until three players have won or the wall is exhausted.

The game uses only suit tiles (no honors), and each player must "void" one suit at the start, discarding all tiles of that suit before playing normally. This mechanic forces interesting strategic decisions and creates a distinctive play experience.

Sichuan Mahjong has exploded in popularity throughout China and is the variant most commonly seen in Chinese mobile games and apps.

Key Features

Blood battle: Game continues after first win
108 tiles only (no winds, dragons, or flowers)
Must void one suit before playing
No calling chows from discards (self-drawn sequences are valid)
Multiple simultaneous wins possible
'Flower Pig' penalty for not voiding suit

What Are the Rules of Sichuan Bloody Mahjong?

Voiding a Suit

After receiving tiles, declare which suit to void. You must discard all tiles of your voided suit before playing normally. This also applies throughout the game — if you draw a tile of your voided suit, you must discard it. Your winning hand cannot contain your voided suit.

Blood Battle

When a player wins, they turn their tiles face-down and stop playing. The remaining players continue until 3 wins occur or the wall is exhausted. This is the 'blood battle.'

Calling Rules

You can only call discards for pungs and kongs — you cannot call a discard to form a sequence. However, sequences formed entirely from your own draws are valid in your winning hand.

Winning Hand

4 sets + 1 pair = win. Sets can be pungs, kongs, or concealed sequences. Special hand: Seven Pairs is also valid.

How Does Sichuan Bloody Mahjong Scoring Work?

Sichuan uses a fan (番) system where points double for each fan:

Basic Fans:

• Base win: 1 point

• Each additional fan: Doubles the value

• Maximum 3-4 fans depending on house rules (8x-16x)

Common Fan Sources:

• Root (4 identical tiles in hand): 1 fan

• All Pungs: 1 fan

• Full Flush (one suit): 2 fan

• Seven Pairs: 2 fan

• Golden Single Wait: 2 fan

• Win after Kong: 1 fan

• Robbing a Kong: 1 fan

• Under the Sea (last tile): 1 fan

Kong Payments (paid immediately, separate from final scoring):

• Exposed Kong (直杠, from a discard): the discarder alone pays 2× base

• Concealed Kong (暗杠, all self-drawn): each remaining opponent pays 2× base

• Added Kong (加杠, adding to an exposed pung): each remaining opponent pays 1× base

• Kong payments are refunded if you are not in tenpai at exhaustive draw

Penalties:

• Flower Pig (花猪): If your hand still contains tiles from your voided suit when another player wins, you pay all winners as if you discarded their winning tile

• Responsible Discard (点炮): If your discard allows multiple players to win simultaneously, you pay all of them

What Are the Best Sichuan Bloody Mahjong Strategies?

  • 1.Choose your void suit carefully - void the suit you have FEWEST tiles in
  • 2.Get rid of voided tiles quickly to start playing normally
  • 3.Pungs are key since chows can't be called from discards
  • 4.Don't get comfortable after one player wins - the battle continues!
  • 5.Watch for Flower Pig penalties near the end - make sure you've fully voided

Fun Facts

Sichuan Mahjong is one of the most popular variants in Chinese mobile gaming
The 'blood battle' (血战到底) name literally means 'fight to the bitter end'
Some versions allow 3-player games with modified rules
The game is closely associated with Sichuan tea culture, often played in local teahouses
Sichuan Bloody is known for fast-paced play — not because voiding itself speeds things up (it actually constrains hand-building), but because the simplified tile set and player culture keep rounds moving quickly
