What accessories do I need to play American Mahjong?

The essentials are: a complete tile set (152 tiles with 8 jokers), 4 racks to hold your tiles, 4 pushers for dealing, dice, and the current year's NMJL card. Many complete sets include all of these. Optional items include betting chips, a table cover or mat, and a card holder.

What's the difference between wood and plastic racks?

Wood racks (often beechwood or bamboo) are heavier, more stable, and feel more premium. Plastic racks are lighter and more affordable. Some players prefer wood for home games and plastic for travel. All-in-one rack/pusher combos save space but offer less flexibility than separate pieces.

Do I need a mahjong table cover or mat?

A table cover isn't required but is highly recommended. Felt or neoprene mats reduce tile noise, prevent tiles from sliding, and protect both tiles and table surfaces. Most mats are portable and roll up for storage. Standard sizes fit card tables (34-36 inches square).

Can I buy replacement tiles for my mahjong set?

Yes, but matching can be difficult. Tile sizes, colors, and designs vary between manufacturers. Some brands like Yellow Mountain Imports sell replacement tile sets. For vintage sets, online marketplaces sometimes have matching tiles. When buying replacements, measure your existing tiles carefully.

What should I look for when buying mahjong racks?

Consider: material (wood vs plastic), length (should hold 14+ tiles comfortably), stability (heavier is better), and whether you want built-in pushers or separate pieces. Some racks have coin/chip slots for betting. For travel, collapsible or all-in-one designs are convenient.

Where can I find affordable mahjong accessories?

Many mahjong accessories are available at a range of price points. Replacement racks and pushers start around $15-25, basic table mats around $20, and carrying cases from $25. Amazon, Yellow Mountain Imports, and specialty retailers like GammonVillage carry a wide selection. Buying a complete mahjong set often gives better value than purchasing accessories individually.
