Comparison Guide
Mahjong Racks vs Pushers
Separate pieces or all-in-one combo? This guide helps you choose the right rack and pusher setup for your playing style.
Size Matters More Than Style
The most important factor is rack length matching your tile size. Standard tiles need 18-18.5" racks. Large-format tiles need 19"+. Playing with all 160 tiles? Get 20" racks. A beautiful rack that's too short for your tiles creates unstable walls and frustration.
What's the Difference?
The Rack
Holds your tiles upright during play. Your hand sits on the rack, hidden from other players. In American mahjong, you typically have 13-14 tiles on your rack plus your wall behind it.
The Pusher
Used at the start of each game to push your tile wall toward the center of the table. After dealing, players push their walls to form the square from which tiles are drawn. Some pushers have angled ends for a cleaner push.

Rack Sizing Guide
Why Size Matters
Your rack needs to hold both your hand tiles (front) and your wall (back, stacked 2-high). Each player's wall has 19 stacks (38 tiles) in standard NMJL play with 152 tiles. Racks that are too short create unstable walls that topple during play.
| Tile Size | Playing Style | Minimum Rack Length |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (~30mm) | NMJL 152 tiles | 18" (18.5" preferred) |
| Standard (~30mm) | Full 160 tiles | 18.5–19" |
| Large format (36mm+) | NMJL 152 tiles | 19" |
| Large format (36mm+) | Full 160 tiles | 20" |
